The Book of Face

Postby bert » Thu Oct 02, 2008 9:35 pm

I am sure you will have heard of Facebook: it's the social network site of the moment with 60 billion* registered users...

You probably know that you can start "groups" on Facebook, but you may not know that you can also create "Pages".
A Page is quite like a profile page for a person, but it's used to represent a (your) "brand". Coke, Pepsi, Nike,
What Facebook wants is for you to step into it's advertising programme and spend some pennies to pushing your page towards your chosen demographic: but you don't have to advertise, so it doesn't have to cost you anything.

You maybe surprised to hear that practically all the big name brands run their own "pages".
I am not a Facebook fanatic, (no time either) but I as I am always looking out for ways to help promote the site and it's members I added a "Fan on Facebook" link to the homepage a short while back, and when I logged into Facebook this evening I was plesantly surprised to see that the "Handmade Contemporary Jewellery" page has 44 "Fans".
What Fanning does is basically add a link to the HCJ page on Facebook to the Fan's profile page, and as there are direct links from the Facebook page to the site it makes a two click hop to the site.

The more Fans the more links, the more links the more fans, the more fans the more links.... That's the theory anyway.

Anyway BIG-UP to all the people who have given the site the thumbs up and become a Fan!

....oh yeh, this post was originally about promotion possibilities. So if you feel that you have a "brand" which people can associate with, and you have some time to sit and set one up; a Facebook page could get 60 billion* users flocking to your site!

*note: made up number.

Facebook can be a very useful tool for promoting yourself as an artist: but it quickly becomes difficult, without quite allot of constrain and understanding of how everything works, to separate work from your personal activity.

Sites like Facebook and Twitter etc can not (I believe) ultimately serve "contemporary jewellery" as a topic well simply because it is too "noisy".
Which is why I believe that the project can (in the long run, and with more involvement by artists) do a much better job at consolidating and presenting (to the audience who are interested) the topic of "contemporary jewellery".

What the project aims to become is a site which presents quality global information on quite a narrow topic.

People will tend to "turn down" the volume (filter out) the "noise" in their "social streams" on sites like Facebook and will find it easier to digest "topic based content" from sites which focus on providing that content.

As well as having 600 fans, the HCJ Project now has a couple of applications which run on Facebook.

The Art jewelry conversation: Which shows the global art jewellery conversation gadget. Make or reply to comments and they appear everywhere : on Facebook, on the HCJ main site, and on anywhere else the gadget is used.

The Art jewellery calendar : The new relaunched calendar. Make sure your exhibitions etc are on it!

Remember these applications promote you: do become a fan, add them to your profile etc etc.
If you need help just ask :D
